Song for devices is a performance featuring the smart phones of the audience. Audience members are prompted to visit a website (through program notes or projected text) where they are invited to choose an audio track and let it play through their phone’s speakers and then place their smartphone on a table onstage whenever they feel. The tracks consist of a variety of drones and rhythmic textures, each around ten minutes long and harmonically compatible with the others. As each audience member starts their track at a different time, the piece ends when all of the tracks have completely played through. Below is a video of it’s performance at CalArts.
