The Sound Sweep (I am Gong)

The Sound-Sweep, a score commissioned by Dora Budor for her exhibit “I am Gong” at the Kunsthalle Basel (May 24 – August 11, 2019) is a multichannel, indeterminate composition designed for 5 rooms with speakers placed in the floors, walls and ceilings.
The Sound-Sweep is named after J.G. Ballard’s short story where architectural spaces absorb and collect the sounds within them and audible music has been rendered obsolete in lieu of “ultrasonic music.”

Exhibition Text

Each room of the sculptural exhibit featured a different sonic identity while the entire composition was experienced as a sequence of walking through the rooms and back.
